Sam Altman, the creator of ChatGPT and CEO of OpenAI, offered some insightful observations about the direction AI is taking and the gadgets that will house it. He recently questioned whether buying new hardware is necessary in order to interface with future AI technology in an interview with MIT Technology Review. He asserted, while in Cambridge, Massachusetts for a variety of events, that new hardware might not be necessary for AI to advance.
Although he acknowledges the buzz around AI devices, Sam Altman says he isn’t very good at designing consumer gear for emerging technology.
The remarks are made in light of rumours in the media that Altman is collaborating with Jony I’ve, the former chief design officer of Apple, to create the “iPhone of AI.” The Information had revealed the previous year that Altman was reportedly in talks to construct his own artificial intelligence device, with people like Masayoshi Son and Jony I’ve as participants.
AI solutions hosted on the cloud
According to Altman’s most recent remarks, it appears that artificial intelligence (AI) will likely primarily reside on the cloud rather than being a component of physical devices. In his ideal world, an AI program would act as a highly knowledgeable friend who knows every detail of a user’s life, including emails and conversations, but it would be able to function on its own without coming across as a simple mirror image of the user.
The recently released AI hardware has received a mixed reception from the market. For example, well-known tech YouTuber Marques Brownlee harshly criticized the AI Pin made by Humane. Conversely, Rabbit’s R1, a small AI gadget, quickly sold out upon its introduction, despite some believing it could simply be a smartphone app.
AI on the iPhone
Anticipation surrounds a major WWDC 2024 event, where Apple is expected to unveil the “biggest iOS update” yet. AI will reportedly take center stage across iOS, iPadOS, WatchOS, TVOS, and MacOS versions. Additionally, discussions are underway with Google and OpenAI to launch a cloud-based chatbot
